The Laughing Owl
I want to hear what this sounds like:

The call of the Laughing Owl has been described as “a loud cry made up of a series of dismal shrieks frequently repeated”. The species was given its name because of this sound. Other descriptions of the call were: “A peculiar barking noise … just like the barking of a young dog”;

They say they’re extinct, but I know better. I want to see one. I just need to get back down to NewZealand and I know it’s gonna happen. There’s been possible encounters as recently as 2000. Here’s a description of one by American tourists in 1985:
They were awoken in their tent by, “the sound of a madman laughing.” According to the campers, the sound terrified them, and they feared for their lives (being as they were so far away from civilization). When they checked to see who was making the noise they reportedly didn’t see anyone or hear any other sign that there was a person in their camp. The travelers hadn’t even heard of the Whēkau Laughing Owl, and their story was never explained until many years later.
Buller (1905) mentions the testimony of a correspondent who claimed that Laughing Owls would be attracted by accordion play. Given that recorded vocalizations are an effective means to attract owls, and given the similarity of a distant accordion’s tune to the call of the Laughing Owl as reported, it is apparent that the method might have worked.
Looks like I will have to learn the accordion before I book the flight. Who wants to give me lessons?

Guy I Know From College Made This Video.
It’s a song about chemicals and depression and maybe dancing. There’s a shark in it (look close), which is nice. Sharks remind me of my friend Heather. I also like the ghost getting up from his seat, a lot.

I saw this at the Met in NY in May 2001. A friend favorited it on youtube. I’d like to thank them. I’m glad to get to see it again. Missed the guy on the far right the most for some reason.

“The clown needs some medicine.”
No shit, kid.
‘Clown video’ raises questions about Anna Nicole Smith.
Los Angeles, California (CNN) — Video of Anna Nicole Smith appearing to mistake a doll for her unborn child was just the reality TV star acting for a camera, a defense lawyer for Howard K. Stern says. Prosecutors presented the tape in a preliminary hearing last week as evidence that Stern and two doctors conspired to keep Smith in a drug stupor in the two years before her death. In what has become known as the “clown video,” a 9-year-old girl seems uncertain whether Smith is pretending or is really having “brain trouble.” Acting or not, Smith’s face — painted like a clown’s — is a disturbing sight in light of her death from “acute combined drug intoxication” six months later. Stern shot the 45-minute-long video at Smith’s Bahamas home on August 12, 2006, at a ninth birthday party for Riley Shelley, the daughter of a friend, according to court testimony…

This show will be running on NY Analog Television in the next few months, a new episode that I host in a series by painter / weirdo / performer Jared Whitham. He has a show tomorrow (Friday Oct 23) in Newark, NJ, huge art show for Newark Art Week. If you are in the area, you have to go and get your mind blown. There also may be free Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwiches.

Another clip (trailer for) the show.

‘When he was in school, Werner never learned anything. He never read the books he was supposed to read, he never studied, he never knew what he was supposed to know, it seemed. But in reality, Werner always knew everything. His senses were remarkable. If he heard the slightest sound, ten years later he would remember it precisely, he would talk about it, and maybe use it some way. But he is absolutely unable to explain anything. He knows, he sees, he understands, but he cannot explain. That is not his nature. Everything goes into him. If it comes out, it comes out transformed.’
— Herzog’s own mother, quoted in Herzog on Herzog by Paul Cronin, pg. ix.

Remembering my gramps today, and where I was when he died. Kind of wish I could ask him some advice. Quite a guy. Instead I’ll watch this video again and get on with it. Miles to go before I sleep & such…
